Briarwood Athletes Shine in Spring Sports Season

Briarwood Athletes Shine in Spring Sports Season

As the school year draws to a close, the Briarwood Mustangs have again demonstrated their athletic skills and competitive spirit in various sports. At Briarwood, our students begin their athletics journey in Middle School, a unique aspect of our athletic program. We believe that participation in sports offers numerous benefits to students with learning differences, such as enhancing motor skills and boosting focus and self-esteem. Briarwood is a proud member of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, or TAPPS, enabling our students to compete with other schools across Texas.

Tennis

Our varsity tennis team secured the TAPPS 1A State Championship, capping off a remarkable season! The boys’ varsity team, with their exceptional skill and teamwork, soared to the top of the state rankings. Congratulations to doubles state champions Ian J. and Andres B. for their stellar performance. Senior Brandon H. finished third place in the individual state rankings.

Track and Field

Our Middle School track athletes concluded their season on a high note at their final meet, bringing home impressive awards and breaking multiple records. The boys’ team successfully defended their conference championship title for the second consecutive year, while the girls’ team finished third! Our athletes broke seven school records this year, including the boys’ 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4×100 relay, 4×200 relay, discus, and girls’ 55 meters. This is a clear testament to their hard work and dedication, with numerous Mustangs also setting new personal bests.

Golf

The varsity golf team had a successful season, ending in a trip to the TAPPS 1A State Championship. The girls’ team placed fifth in the state! Their skill, focus, and determination throughout the season were commendable, and we are so proud of their dedication.

Each of these achievements represents the talent and commitment of our Briarwood athletes and the support from our coaches and community. Congratulations to all our student-athletes for a successful sports season.

Career Day Inspires Briarwood Students

Career Day Inspires Briarwood Students

“I’m not sure what I want to be when I grow up, but I bet I’ll have some good ideas later!” This was just one of the statements made by Lower School students on Wednesday, April 3, during The Briarwood School’s second annual Career Day.

Thanks to the participation of our Mustang parents, students had the chance to explore a diverse range of professions. From chefs to engineers, ballerinas to pediatric doctors, airline pilots to chief administrative officers, graphic designers to financial advisors, and even senior medical consultants to the Department of Defense, ICU nurses, media directors, and more, there was a wealth of career options to discover.

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for students with learning differences to be told that they won’t succeed in higher education or certain careers. At Briarwood, we reinforce the belief that you can do hard things and anything you set your mind to. We equip our students with the tools they need to succeed, such as diagnostic-prescriptive instruction and a voice and choice in their learning. Career Day takes that mission a step further, showing students the vast array of opportunities available to them.

A special thank you to faculty members Evelyn O’Krinsky, Thaint Elliott, Chelsea Glenn, and Kate McCauley for their student-centered focus, passion, and effort in making Career Day a success.

Briarwood’s Eagle Scout Crafts Legacy with Project

Colin, an Upper School student at Briarwood, recently completed a remarkable two-part Eagle Scout project. The first part, undertaken before the school year began, involved Colin’s dedicated work on crafting benches for the hallways. These benches, created with care and skill, were designed for use by classmates and future Briarwood students, offering a comfortable addition to our school’s hallways. With determination and support from his family and friends in Pearland Troop 446, he brought this multifaceted project to life.

On the first day of the second part of the project, Colin and his team began by dismantling the old pergola, a structure built back in 1999 by another Briarwood student named Michael for his Eagle Scout Project. The memories of the past were carefully taken apart, making way for a new beginning. They poured the concrete bases for the upcoming pergola, setting a strong foundation for what was to come.

The second day was all about the construction of the new pergola. Colin’s passion and craftsmanship shone as he and his team worked tirelessly, turning raw materials into a stunning piece of architecture for our school. With each swing of the hammer and every precise cut, the pergola took shape, symbolizing a blend of past and present – a legacy of both Eagle Scout projects and Briarwood students. It was a labor of love, made possible by the generosity of Colin’s family and friends. The photos from the project work days stand as a testament to his dedication and the community spirit that made this project a reality.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Colin and Troop 446 for gifting us with the beautiful pergola and benches, two wonderful additions that will be appreciated by all and continue to inspire future generations at our school.
