Riding Through Tradition: A Briarwood Student’s Journey on the Salt Grass Trail Ride

For most Houstonians, the rodeo is a can’t-miss event. But for one Briarwood student, it’s more than just a tradition, it’s a nine-day journey.

Helton, an 11th grader and first-year Briarwood student, completed the full Salt Grass Trail Ride leading into the Houston Rodeo, something few can say they’ve done.

“It feels kind of cool… being able to say that I did it,” he shared.

A Family Tradition & Life on the Trail

For Helton, the trail ride is deeply rooted in family. Both of his parents have participated for decades, his mom for over 20 years and his dad for more than 30, making this experience a continuation of a long-standing legacy.

The Salt Grass Trail Ride spans nine days, beginning near Cat Spring and ending at Memorial Park in Houston. Each day starts early (around 5:40 a.m.) with responsibilities that go far beyond just riding.

From feeding and brushing horses to saddling them up and preparing for the day ahead, Helton quickly learned the discipline and routine required on the trail. By 9 a.m., riders set out for the day, traveling miles before breaking for rest stops and lunch along the way.

Evenings are spent in horse trailers and campers, what Helton jokingly describes as “glamping.”

Growth Along the Way

Over the course of the ride, Helton gained more than just miles. He gained independence.

“I finally completely memorized how to saddle a horse,” he said, noting one of the many skills he developed throughout the experience.

He also learned how to stay motivated through long days, drawing energy from the shared commitment of fellow riders.

One of the highlights? Seeing familiar faces.

When Briarwood classmates came out to support him along the route, it added a special layer to the experience, blending school community with a uniquely Houston tradition.

Carrying the Experience Forward

While Helton humbly describes the experience as “kind of cool,” completing all nine days of the trail ride is no small feat.

It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t always happen in big, loud moments, but in early mornings, steady effort, and showing up day after day.

At Briarwood, we see that same journey in our students every day, building confidence, forming meaningful connections, and discovering just how far they can go.
