The Middle-Upper School is a structured academic program combining remedial and grade level content for students with diagnosed learning differences, grades 7-12. Teachers employ direct instruction within classes of 8-12 students to remediate skills in academic deficit areas, develop compensatory strategies to accommodate personal learning needs and promote self-advocacy skills to ensure that those needs are met. Each student is offered an array of electives and activities such as student council, drama, business skills, art, yearbook and athletics. Briarwood is a member of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), District 4, Class 2A Interscholastic Athletic League. At Briarwood, 85% of our graduates attend schools of higher learning.
The teachers and administrators are proud of the varied accomplishments of each of our students. Twice each year we present awards that recognize outstanding academic achievement.
Breakfast of Champions and Effort/Attitude Honor Roll
At the end of each semester—January and May—Briarwood recognizes those students who earn a minimum of 25 A's, 3 B's and no C's in Effort/Attitude grades. In January we hold the Breakfast of Champions and in May we hold the Effort/Attitude Honor Roll.
Outstanding Achievement Award
Each year in May, the teachers of each department recognize students in each grade level who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement compared with standard departmental norms in a given subject.
Outstanding Improvement Award
The teachers of each department have the opportunity to recognize a student in each grade level who has made significant improvement over the year in the mastery of material and concepts in a given subject. These awards are given in May.
