Briarwood Fighting Mustangs

Students in 7th through 12th grades are eligible to participate in Briarwood's interscholastic athletic programs. Athletic participation is considered an important facet of our total approach to education.

Briarwood athletes compete against athletes from other area schools in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) District 6, Class 3A Interscholastic Athletic League. Both Middle School and Upper School teams compete for medals and trophies in their Divisions. Briarwood has a time honored tradition of distinctive performance and athletic championships.

All Upper School students who participate in soccer, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, tennis, golf and track are eligible to letter. Athletes are nominated by their coaches, approved by the Athletic Director and confirmed by the Upper School Coordinator and School Principal.

Criteria include:

  • attendance at games and practices
  • demonstrated leadership, cooperation and sportsmanship
  • good academic standing
  • membership on an All-District team
  • membership on a team that goes to Regional or State competitions

Athletic Awards

At the end of each school year, we recognize athletic performance and contribution at our annual Middle/Upper School Sports Banquet. The Banquet, put on by the Athletic Booster Club, is a celebration of challenges met and achievements won. There are 3 annual awards presented at the Banquet:

  • The Brian Boles Award
  • The Martha Stanley Award
  • The Most Outstanding Athlete Award

The awards recognize individual students for their leadership on and off the field, their contributions to their teams, and their embodiment of the Mustang spirit. The recipients of these awards are nominated by the coaching staff; approved by Stephanie Gore, Athletic Director; reviewed by Linda Decker, Middle-Upper School Head; and, confirmed by Carole Wills, Head of School.
