Our Admissions team requires that a current (within two years) full psychoeducational evaluation is submitted for review before applying to our program. If applying is not recommended, alternative educational options will be discussed.

Our Students

Profile of a Briarwood Student

Students at Briarwood have average to above average intellectual abilities and have not yet reached their academic potential in traditional school environments. Briarwood students typically have a primary diagnosis of dyslexia, and may need additional support with dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and/or ADHD.

Learning Differences & Disabilities

Dyslexia

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

 

  • Difficulty with spelling
  • Difficulty learning phonics (sounding out words)
  • Requires extra help in school due to problems with reading and spelling
Dysgraphia
  • Has trouble organizing words on the page from left to right
  • Writes letters that go in all directions and letters and words that run together on a page
  • Has a hard time writing on a line and inside the margins
  • Has a hard time understanding spelling rules
  • Can spell correctly orally but makes spelling errors in writing
  • Blends printing and cursive
  • Has trouble reading their own writing
Dyscalculia
  • Not being able to recognize printed numbers, or trouble imagining a number line
  • Trouble learning to count, or only counting on their fingers
  • Not understanding that a number represents quantity
  • Anxiety about working on math problems or going to math class
  • Trouble adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing single-digit numbers
  • Not knowing which steps to follow to solve a math problem
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Difficulty sustaining attention in play and tasks, including conversations, tests, or lengthy assignments
  • Finding it hard to follow through on instructions or finish schoolwork or chores
  • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities, such as doing tasks in sequence
  • Fidgeting while seated
  • Getting up and moving around when expected to stay seated, such as in a classroom
Executive Function

Executive function is an umbrella term for the complex cognitive processes that underlie flexible, goal-directed learning (Goldstein & Naglieri, 2015). There are several key executive function processes that influence literacy and all academic performance:

  • Goal-setting
  • Cognitive flexibility/flexible thinking
  • Organizing and prioritizing
  • Working memory
  • Self-monitoring (Meltzer, 2010, 2014, 2018).
 
What disabilities are not served at Briarwood?

Briarwood does not provide placement for certain disability diagnoses. These include Intellectual Disability, Autism, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, and Emotional Disturbance.

Application Screening

The academic screening provides additional information regarding the applicant’s level in math and reading. Combined with the psychoeducational evaluation, it provides necessary information and helps determine possible placement in The Briarwood School.

The Admissions Process
Step 1
Schedule a Tour
  • Schedule a tour here!
  • Touring allows prospective families to learn more about our school, ask questions, and see students/teachers in action.
Step 2
Submit Evaluation
  • Submit a current (within 2 years) full psychoeducational evaluation to our Admissions team.
    • Testing/evaluations (completed within the past two years), including: psycho-education testing/F.I.E. (Full Individualized Evaluation); cognitive testing (WISC-IV or Woodcock Johnson); academic achievements; comprehensive, professional interpretation of test scores and a relevant diagnosis; and professional recommendations for classroom accommodations.
  • Our team will review your child’s evaluation and determine if an application should be submitted.
  • If applying is not recommended, alternative educational options will be discussed.
Step 3
Submit an Online Application
  • If an application is recommended, a link will be shared by our Admissions team.
  • Parents log into the Admissions Portal to complete the application.
  • Applications must be completed by January 16, 2024 in order to be considered for first round Admissions. Additionally, all required documentation must be submitted and shadow day completed by Friday, February 23, 2024.
  • A non-refundable processing fee of $300 is required.
Step 4
Upload Documentation
  • Completed parent questionnaire, school record release form, and current report card
  • Testing/evaluations (completed within the past two years)
  • HAIS Teacher Recommendation
  • Speech & Language and/or Occupational & Physical Therapy Evaluation, if administered
  • Assessment of psycho-social functioning is administered, or done upon request
Step 5
Receipt of Documentation
Once all required documentation is received, the Admissions Committee will evaluate the completed application.
Step 6
Student Screening
  • After the Admissions Committee reviews the completed application and required documentation, applicants will be invited for a shadow day.
  • The shadow day includes an informal academic assessment of reading, math, and written/oral language.
  • Shadow day schedules are from 7:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Affording Briarwood
Tuition Assistance Application
Briarwood strives to offer tuition assistance to as many families as possible through grants and donations.

While tuition assistance is offered, it is important for the family to assume primary responsibility for financing their child’s education. Both parents/guardians, if applicable, are expected to contribute to tuition. When completing tuition assistance documents, both parents/guardians are expected to include all assets.

Below is more information on the tuition assistance process, including time lines, required documents, and who to contact for help.

Tuition Assistance Deadline

Please note that the deadline for the tuition assistance application for the 2024-2025 school year is March 1, 2024.

Tuition Assistance applications received after the deadline may be considered, however, only to the extent that funds are available. It’s highly encouraged that your application and required documentation are submitted on or before the due date. It’s probable that funds will not be available for applications submitted beyond the due date.

After the deadline, the Tuition Assistance Committee meets to review applications and award assistance to qualified applicants.

Required Documentation

You will need the following items ready to upload:

  • 2023 W-2 Wage Reports, 1099 Forms, and Schedule K-1 as applicable
  • 2023 Year-End Mortgage Statements
  • Copy of FILED 2023 Form 1040 (or other personal income tax form filed with the
    IRS)
  • Most recent pay stubs from employer(s), including annual income
  • Annual housing expenses and utilities (separated)
  • Other annual expenses (childcare, medical costs, etc.)
  • Loan balances and payments (credit cards, school loans, vehicle loans, etc.)
  • Assets with values (home equity, stocks, 401(k), savings accounts, etc.)

Please note: You must file your 2023 taxes BEFORE we can review your application and determine an award.
