Speech & Language

The Speech and Language Department employs a staff of licensed and certified speech-language pathologists. Services are offered to students in the Lower, Middle-Upper, and Tuttle Schools for an additional monthly fee. A variety of therapeutic techniques and programs are utilized during both individualized and group therapy sessions.

The goal of the Briarwood Speech & Language Department is to develop proficiency in the oral and written languages, therefore ensuring success in every aspect of learning and development.

Staff

Therapists within The Briarwood Speech and Language Department hold licensure through  the Texas State Board of Examiners and certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In addition to ongoing professional development at  local, state, and national conferences, our staff of speech-language pathologists has been trained in a variety of specialized  techniques and programs including:

    • Visualizing and Verbalizing

Services We Provide

Students receive treatment in both individual and small group sessions from two to four times weekly. Collaboration with both parents and teachers is an integral part of the student’s therapy program. A monthly fee is assessed for speech therapy services in addition to tuition charges.

Who is Best Served?

A disorder in any area of communication can limit an individual’s social and academic progress. Problems might occur in the areas of speech and /or language.

Speech Disorders are characterized by problems in correctly producing speech sounds.

Examples of speech disorders:

  • Apraxia (motor speech disorder)Speech
  • Articulation/Phonological disorder
  • Fluency /stuttering
  • Voice

Language Disorders are characterized by a difficulty in understanding others (receptive language) or in communicating ideas (expressive language). 

Services may be provided for:

  • Aphasia
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Augmentative /alternative communication
  • Hearing impairment
  • Language based learning disability / dyslexia
  • Social /pragmatic communication disorder
  • Written language disorder

 

Mission of The Speech & Language Department
It is the mission of the Briarwood Speech and Language Department to provide therapeutic techniques and research-based services that empower students with diagnosed learning differences or developmental disorders to reach their full potential in the areas of communication and academics.
